India on Sunday registered its highest single-day spike in the number of coronavirus cases with 8380 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country has climbed to 1, 82,143 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to COVID-19 cases rose to 5164 on Sunday with 193 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Of the 193 deaths reported since Saturday morning, 99 were from Maharashtra, 27 from Gujarat, 18 from Delhi, nine each from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, seven from West Bengal, six each from Tamil Nadu and Telangana, five in Bihar, three from Uttar Pradesh, two from Punjab, and one each from Haryana and Kerala.

The number of active cases in the country is 89995 so far, according to the health ministry.

A total of 86983 patients have cured or discharged from hospitals until now.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state in the country registering a total of 65,168 cases till Sunday.

The second and the third states that have been worse affected by the coronavirus pandemic include Tamil Nadu and Delhi.

As per the Health Ministry data, Tamil Nadu had recorded a total of 21,184 cases so far and Delhi’s COVID-19 tally climbed to 18549 on Sunday.

According to John Hopkins University tally, India is ranked ninth among the worst COVID-19-affected nations.
