A meeting of the Darrang District Women Cell, held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office at Mangaldai on Tuesday, discussed the constant upward curve of the cases of crimes against women in the district over last few years.

All the speakers at the meeting, presided over by the chairperson of the cell and the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district,  expressed concern over the rise in the crimes against women in Darrang district

The district has recorded 1046 cases in 2015 with subsequent increase in every year.

The figure in 2016 stood at 1286 with a rise of 240 cases. In 2017, the district recorded 1422 cases of crimes against women and this year, till the month of February, the figure has already touched 174.

The meeting attended by its members including Sipajhar Circle Officer Manali Jain, Mangaldai Election Officer Antara Gogoi, Additional Superintendent of Police, Darrang, Satyajit Nath, Sub-Divisional Medical and Health Officer Dr Nirmal Kr Beriya, lawyer Premeswar Sarma, representatives from the District Child Protection Office, woman activist Rashmi Rekha Sarma, social entrepreneur and journalist Mayukh Goswami discussed different issues relating to checking crimes against women.

The meeting discussed the effect of smart phones, drive against definite pockets of anti social elements, contraband drugs, immediate appointment of lady police officer in the new women cell at Mangaldai Police Station, formation of village level action groups and pragmatic time-bound plans for mass awareness among others.
