Assam’s first COVID-19 patient from Karimganj district is still positive, even after the seventh test.

Dr Babul Bezbaruah, principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) said the 52-year old person who had been admitted to the hospital on March 31 has also been battling with cancer and diabetes.

“The patient is in stable condition but his COVID-19 tests as per protocol have yielded no negative results even after seventh round of tests. We are monitoring his health and hope that he will recover soon,” Dr Bezbaruah said.

The SMCH principal said that ahead of Ramzan, the patient has been medically permitted to keep fasting and special focus has been given on his food.

A doctor has been attached to monitor his diabetes condition.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that even after discharge of so many patients from the hospitals, the first COVID19 positive patient, Jamal Uddin, is yet to be released.

“He (Jamal Uddin) is undergoing treatment in Silchar Medical College Hospital and his samples continue to test positive,” Sarma added.

Assam so far has registered 35 COVID19 positive cases of which 27 patients have been discharged from hospital so far.

The deadly virus claimed one person in Assam. The state currently has only 7 active COVID-19 cases.
