Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying about the existence detention centre and pointed out construction of such buildings at Matia in Lower Assam’s Goalpara district.

The construction of country’s first standalone foreigner detention centre at Matia began in December 2018.

The detention centre will have a capacity to house 3000 inmates.

Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on December 23 had said there is no detention centre in India.

“Neither are any of the country’s Muslims being sent to detention centres nor is there any detention centre in India. It’s a white lie,” Modi said.

He accused the Congress and others of spreading the rumour that Muslims would be sent to detention centres.

“The RSS’s prime minister is lying to Bharat Mata,” Rahul said in a tweet on Thursday.

There are at least six detention camps in jails in Assam.

The BJP’s IT cell head, Amit Malviya, hit back at Rahul Gandhi.

He twitted a home ministry press release from 2011 saying the Assam government (the Congress was in power both at the Centre and in the state at the time) had set up three detention camps — at Goalpara, Kokrajhar and Silchar — and that over 360 illegal immigrants had been sent to these centres.
