Cutting short on her honeymoon, National People’s Party (NPP) MP from Tura, Agatha Sangma rushed back to the Parliament as the contentious CAB is scheduled to come up in Lok Sabha soon.
According to reports, Agatha Sangma, who tied her nuptial knot on November 21 with Patrick Rongma Marak, returned to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as she felt that her presence was important in the Parliament.
The BJP has the majority in the Lok Sabha and it is certain that the CAB will be passed in the Lower House without any hassle; however, it will still want the support of the MPs of its allies.
Though NPP is a partner of the ruling NDA, the party, however, has been opposing the Citizenship (Amendment), Bill.
The contentious Bill has been vehemently opposed in Meghalaya and in such a situation it will be interesting to see Sangma’s stand.
Will she stand by the political alliance or will she stand by the sentiments of the people of Meghalaya- is the all-important question.
Sources say that the Tura MP may attend CAB-related debates and take an active part in it as well, however, she may refrain herself from voting.
“She might skip going to the Parliament on the day of voting,” sources said.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh recently lashed out on the absentee MPs and said it was sending out a wrong message.
Sources added that Sangma’s presence in the Parliament will throw a positive message to the absentee MPS and will act as a catalyst to bring them back to the Parliament.
Sangma’s marriage on November 21 was attended by a number of distinguished guests including Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio and Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma among others.
Her husband Patrick Rongma Marak is a physician by profession.
Sangma also held the distinction of being the youngest minister of state in the Manmohan Singh cabinet during the second UPA regime.
