Carcass of a wild jumbo was recovered on Tuesday at Nagrijuli along the bank of river Bornadi under Tamulpur subdivision in Baksa district.
The dead elephant would be 18 years old, said forest officials.
The locals found the carcass of the wild elephant lying on the ground along river Bornadi near the Indo-Bhutan border on Tuesday and informed it to the local forest officials.
Receiving the information, a team of forest officials reached the spot and took the custody of the carcass.
Later, the forest officials’ team made arrangement for conducting post-mortem of the deceased wild jumbo and buried it.
A forest official said, “The wild elephant may have consumed some poisonous food causing its death.”
The forest official also informed that a huge herd of wild elephants has been still taking shelter along the bank of river Bornadi.
Due to encroachment, wild elephants have been facing shortage of food and in search of food herds of wild elephants come down from hills towards the rural areas and get involved into conflicts with human beings.
“As a result of the man-elephant conflicts, more than 90 people have died and over 13 wild elephants have lost their lives in the last 10-15 years,” said sources.
The locals said, “No measure has been taken by the forest department to control the atrocity of wild elephants.”
“The common people demand that the forest department provide proper security to save the lives and property of the common people as well as the lives of wild elephants,” added locals.
