The Assam government has declared Monday (October 28) as the local holiday in Kamrup (Metro) district on account of Diwali.
“All state government offices, educational institutions and banks will remain closed during this holiday. The local holiday is declared under NI Act,” said a press communiqué issued by the CM’s PR cell.
Earlier, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal extended his greetings to the people of Assam on the festive occasion of Diwali.
In a message, the chief minister said the festival of lights signifies the triumph of good over evil and serves to dispel darkness and ignorance from society.
He urged the people to make the festival more illuminating yet safe and without any hazardous fallout taking forward the government’s avowed goal of making Assam a pollution-free state.
Sonowal also made a call to the people to pledge on the occasion to stand united against all divisive forces and join the efforts in building a more prosperous and vibrant Assam.
Along with other parts of the country, the people of Assam also celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, on Sunday with much fanfare.
The people of the state decorated their houses with colourful electric lights, lit earthen lamps and burst firecrackers.
In Guwahati, the students of Cotton University also decorated Rangoli with earthern lamps on the occasion of Diwali festival on Sunday.
The people were asked to stop bursting of crackers in between 8 pm-10 pm following a 2018 Supreme Court.
However, sounds of bursting of crackers were reported from various parts of the state.
Despite flying squads deployed in various parts of Guwahati, bursting of crackers continued till late night.
