The Assam Congress, on Thursday, came down heavily on the BJP-led state government over the firing incident at Dholpur-Sipajhar in Assam’s Darrang district during an eviction drive.

The opening of fire by the police has led to death of a person. Moreover, many including several police personnel also sustained injuries in the clash between locals and police.

The Assam Congress, while slamming the BJP-led government said that the state government knows to rule only with the “might of bullet”.

Condemning Thursday’s firing incident, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah said: “It is becoming very clear that the BJP government only knows how to govern through the might of the bullet.”

“Such type of governance is highly condemnable and is dangerous for a democratic society. The Congress party warns the BJP government not to indulge in actions that will turn Assam into a police state,” Borah added.

Further condemning the eviction drive at Dholpur-Sipajhar, the Assam Congress chief has accused the state government of not following the Supreme Court directive that ‘prohibits’ eviction during pandemic times.

Bhupen Borah said: “The Supreme Court has given a directive against eviction during pandemic situation yet the Assam government led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has remained adamant behaving in an autocratic manner to evict the residents of Dholpur, who have been living in the area since 1970s.”

“We demand that the CM should first rehabilitate the people and not evict them forcefully,” the Assam Congress president further said.
