Troops of Assam Rifles have apprehended two Myanmar nationals with arms and ammunition in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.

Based on specific input, Lunglei Battalion of Assam Rifles launched an operation on Wednesday at Sekul-Lui River in between Village Zochachua and Varang of Lawngtlai district.

“The team had specific information of exchange of weapons near Gen area Laitlang, right on Indo-Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles team along with Police representatives laid a trap along the Sekul-Lui river.

“Upon the approach of a boat on the river, the team stopped it and carried out a detailed search of the boat and recovered an automatic rifle of Myanmarese origin, a magazine and 26 rounds of ammunition,” Assam Rifles said in a statement.

The Assam Rifles later handed over the arrested Myanmar nationals to Mizoram police.

“This operation is a huge setback for all anti-national activists. The operation’s success would go a long way in the establishment of peace and harmony along the Indo Myanmar Border,” said the statement.
