A five-member delegation led by former deputy mayor Samar Chakraborty has requested Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) commissioner Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal to give more time to poor beneficiaries, who were unable to construct their houses despite receiving funding under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana(PMAY) –Urban.
The delegation met the commissioner on Tuesday in Agartala in Tripura and asked him to take necessary steps by adopting a humanitarian approach without canceling the allotted houses.
The AMC recently served notices to 6,143 beneficiaries demanding an explanation on why the funds allotted under the PMAY scheme have not been utilized to build houses, said Samar Chakraborty.
The beneficiaries were asked to respond to the notices by June 11.
They stand to lose the houses if they fail to furnish a proper explanation for the same.
“The poor are facing a difficult situation during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the allocation of funds they could not build their house at the right time due to lack of more money and unavailability of masons and workers to construct the buildings,” Choudhury said.
“We requested the AMC to give these people some more time in view of the current situation,” he said.
Former mayor-in-councils Fhulan Bhattacharjee, Krishna Majumder and Biswajit Deb were also present on the occasion.
