A 19-year-old footballer from Taliban-ruled Afghanistan is among those killed due to fall from a US military plane in Kabul. 

Afghan national team football player Zaki Anwari fell to his death as he tried to escape Kabul by clinging onto a US plane. 

It was confirmed by General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports of Afghanistan. 

It said: “It is with great sadness that Zaki Anwari, one of the players of the national junior football team of the country, died in a bad accident. The late Anwari was among hundreds of young people who wanted to leave the country, fell down in an accident from a US plane and lost his life.”

In a harrowing video from Kabul airport, thousands of people were seen running alongside a US Air Force plane as it was about to take off. 

“Before the air crew could offload the cargo, the aircraft was surrounded by hundreds of Afghan civilians,” US Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek had said. 

Anwari death was confirmed following investigation by US Air Force into the recovery of human remains from the wheels of the C-17 aircraft that took off from Kabul. 

Zaki Anwari was a student of Esteqlal High School — one of the most prestigious schools in Afghanistan.
