A person who was injured after being shot by BSF on suspicion of being a cattle smuggler died at the hospital during treatment while another dead body was recovered near a river at the encounter site under the Daribas border outpost in Coochbehar bordering Bangladesh.

The BSF in a statement said, “On villagers’ request a search operation of another Indian National was carried out who

was also among them and was missing since the incidents of last night”.

The BSF said that during the search operation another dead body was recovered which the BSF termed to be of an alleged cattle smuggler.

The dead body was recovered from the banks of the Singhimari river.

The deceased has been identified as Jahidul Miya, a resident of Jaridharlla village of Coochbehar district.

The deceased was also named in an FIR regarding illegal cattle transportation and as he too was accused of being an active cattle “courier” by the BSF.

Earlier in the wee hours of Thursday, one of his associates identified as Lutfar Rahman was injured in an encounter but during his treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.

The BSF further stated that the injured person was an “active cattle courier/smuggler”. His wife is also accused of being involved in trans-border crimes.

“His wife was apprehended by the troops of BSF in November 2020 under NDPS Act. Since then she has been under judicial custody”, said BSF.
