Congress parliamentarian from Tamil Nadu, H Vasanthakumar, has died of COVID19 infection.

The Lok Sabha MP from Kanyakumari succumbed to the infection on Friday. This has been confirmed by the party.

“We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Shri H. Vasanthakumar. A staunch Congressman, true leader of the people & beloved MP,” Congress said on its Twitter handle.

“He will be sorely missed by all members of the Congress party & his followers. Our prayers are with his family in this time of grief,” the party added.

The MP was undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

The hospital authorities in a statement said: “Vasanthakumar was battling COVID19 and was critical”.

The 70-year-old leader was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai on August 10 with Coronavirus infection, it said.

“Despite all active medical measures his condition deteriorated gradually due to COVID complication and passed away today,” the hospital said.

Vasanthakumar, who was the first-time MP from Tamil Nadu, also served as MLA for two terms.

He was being treated at the Greams Road facility of the Apollo Hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his deep condolence at the demise of the parliamentarian.

“Saddened by the demise of Lok Sabha MP Shri H. Vasanthakumar Ji. His strides in business and social service efforts were noteworthy,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

“During my interactions with him, I always saw his passion towards Tamil Nadu’s progress. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” the PM added.
