The Supreme Court on Friday admitted the Tripura government’s plea challenging the Tripura High Court’s ban on animal sacrifice in the state.
A bench headed by Justice Rohinton Nariman issued notice to petitioner Subhash Bhattacharjee for the same.
The Tripura High Court on September 28 had banned sacrifice of animals or birds for religious reasons in all temples of the state.
A division bench comprising chief justice Sanjay Karol and justice Arindam Lodh banned animal sacrifice in all temples after hearing a public interest litigation (PIL).
“No person including the State shall be allowed to sacrifice any animal/bird within the precincts of any of the temples within the State of Tripura,” the High Court had said.
The bench had also directed the district magistrates and the state police to ensure implementation of the order.
It also directed the state chief secretary to immediately install CCTV cameras at two major temples of the state – Devi Tripureswari temple and Chaturdas Devata temple – where a large number of animals are sacrificed.
