Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has lost the trust vote in the House of Representatives.

Prime Minister Oli managed to secure only 93 votes in the lower house of the Napalese Parliament during a special session.

As many as 124 representatives voted against the Prime Minister.

Oli required at least 136 votes to win the confidence motion.

“As the votes cast in favour of the motion fell short to achieve a majority of the existing strength of the House of Representatives, I hereby declare that the prime minister’s motion to seek a vote of confidence has been rejected,” Speaker Agni Sapkota announced.

Notably, last week, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), a key faction led by Pushpakamal Dahal, had withdrawn support from the government, leaving it without a majority in the House.

After losing the Vote of Confidence, the Prime Minister is automatically removed from his post and now the new coalition government will be formed as per the constitutional process, said senior Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh.

Prominent leaders, including Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepali Congress and Prachanda, blamed Oli for his failure to tackle the Covid outbreak that has spiked over the last few weeks.
