The Meghalaya government will discuss the implementation of pay revision for teachers under the deficit schools category of in the cabinet within ten days.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma gave this assurance during a discussion with a joint delegation of the Khasi Jaiñtia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers’ and Employees Association (GHDSTEA) at the main secretariat here on Friday.

During the meeting the teachers’ delegation impressed upon the government to immediately implement the recommendations of the Meghalaya Fifth Pay Commission as it was implemented for the state government employees.

There are altogether 6,686 teachers of deficit schools right from primary to higher who would benefit once the revised salary is implemented. The pay revision will be effective from January 1, 2017.

Few days back, the teachers had met education minister Lahkmen Rymbui on this issue.

Terming the meeting with the chief minister as “very forthcoming and straight forward” KJDSTA president E D Nongsiang said the chief minister has assured that he would take up the matter and discuss in the state cabinet within 10 days.

The teachers also urged the government through the chief minister to consider extending pension benefits to teachers as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission and also introduce the Assured Carrier Progressive Scheme (ACPS) and medical reimbursement.

They also discussed about the long pending implementation of the state education policy, service rules for teachers of deficit schools, provincialization of service of deficit school teachers, and numerous errors in school textbooks published by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE).

Nongsiang said the chief minister has informed that within two months, the government would be able to make public the draft education policy, and the draft service rules was ready for circulation to teachers so that views and suggestions could be solicited from them.

On errors in school textbooks, Nongsiang said that the government would soon hold review meeting on this issue and told the teachers that the government was keen to see that the board has a full-fledged chairman.

On the provincialization of service of deficit school teachers, the chief minister has assured that another round of discussion on this matter would be held with the delegation.
