In a major development, India is all set to lead 3 key committees of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
The 3 important committees of the UN Security Council include Taliban Sanctions Committee, Counter Terrorism Committee and the Libyan Sanctions Committee.
This was informed by Ambassador of India to UN TS Tirumurti.
“Happy to announce that India will be chairing 3 key subsidiary bodies of UN Security Council during 2021-22: Taliban Sanctions Committee, Counter Terrorism Committee (for 2022) and Libya Sanctions Committee,” informed Ambassador of India to UN TS Tirumurti on Friday.

India will lead the three UN Security Council committees during the 2021-22 session.
“The Taliban Sanctions Committee has always been a high priority for India. Chairing this Committee will help keep the focus on the presence of terrorists and their sponsors, threatening the peace process in Afghanistan,” Tirumurti further said.
India will also head the Counter Terrorism Committee.
This Committee was formed in September 2001 after the 9/11 attack in New York.
India had earlier chaired this Security Council committee during 2011-12.
“India will also chair the Counter Terrorism Committee in 2022. The chairing of this Committee has a special resonance for India, which has not only been at the forefront of fighting terrorism, especially cross-border terrorism but has also been one of its biggest victims,” Tirumurti said.
Tirumurti further stated that the Libya Sanctions Committee is a very important subsidiary body of the UN Security Council, which implements the sanctions regime.
“We will be assuming the Chair of this Committee at a critical juncture when there is an international focus on Libya and on their peace process,” he added.
