Yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded that the central government take strict action against yoga guru Ramdev for his commentates on allopathic medicines.

Ramdev had allegedly described allopathy as a “stupid science” and stated that “lakhs of [Covid] patients have died after taking allopathic medicines.”

The IMA said that his “unlearned” comments could mislead people.

A video circulating on social media shows Ramdev calling modern medicine a “stupid science”.

He allegedly goes on to say that medicines including remdesivir and fabiflu, approved by the Drugs Controller General of India, failed to treat Covid patients in India and have caused the deaths of lakhs of people.

The IMA said that the yoga guru should be prosecuted under the Epidemic Diseases Act because his “untutored” statements are “a threat to the literate society of the country as well as to the poor people falling prey to him.”

The IMA demanded that he be prosecuted for causing danger to the life of many by advising them not to take the advice of allopathic doctors.

“If the minister [Harsh Vardhan] does not take suo moto action, we will be forced to resort to democratic means of struggle to propagate the truth to the common man. We will knock at the doors of the judiciary to get due justice,” the statement read.

The doctors’ body has sent a legal notice to Ramdev asking for a ‘written apology’ and ‘recall of statements’.

The Resident Doctors’ Associations of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Safdarjung Hospital also condemned Ramdev’s statements and demanded that action be taken.

The Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust, of which Ramdev is the founder, said the remarks were taken out of context.
