The Union Home Ministry (MHA) on Saturday asked all states and Union Territories (UTs) to take steps for implementing Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2020 to provide welfare measures to the community. L

In a notification issued by the MHA, it was said that the law mandate adequate steps to be taken by the State Governments and UTs for not only for providing welfare measures to be taken, but inter-alia, steps to be taken for protection, rehabilitation and rescue of a transgender person.

“You are requested to initiate necessary measures in terms of the Act immediately and undertake a necessary training programme for the police and prison officials,” the notification said.

Giving more clarity, the MHA said that denying a transgender person the right of passage of a public place or obstruct such person from using or having access to a public place to which other members has access to is a punishable offence.

The MHA notification has asked all States and UTs to take necessary steps in this regard.
