The tombs of the Taj Mahal, the iconic historical monument of India, have been cleaned for the first time after its construction over 300 years ago.

The massive cleaning project was undertaken in the Taj Mahal recently ahead of the US President, Donald Trump’s visit to the country.

As per reports, the replicas of the graves inside the Taj Mahal have been cleaned for the first time ever since their installation.

The real graves of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal are located in a chamber below the replicas.

The cleaning project was carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The replicas of the two graves had been cleaned with the help of a clay-pack treatment, which involves the application of a thick layer of clay, followed by a wash with distilled water.

The chandelier above the graves had also been cleaned with tamarind water.

Moreover, the ASI had cleaned the entire monument to remove marks from the walls and floors.

The campus of the Taj Mahal had also been thoroughly cleaned ahead of the US President’s visit with his entourage.

The original Taj Mahal graves are only opened to the public for three days a year, to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Shah Jahan.

The Taj Mahal, which is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture, was constructed within a 22 year period – from 1632 to 1653.

Trump along with First Lady Melania arrived at the Taj Mahal on Tuesday evening.

The US President along with his entourage landed at Ahmedabad at 11. 30 am on Tuesday.
