India, on Wednesday, logged nearly 7000 new COVID-19 cases. 

As many as 6984 new cases have been reported in India. 

The number of cases detected in India on Wednesday is 20.7% higher than Tuesday. 

However, the number of active cases in the country declined to 87,562. 

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is spreading at an unprecedented rate.

Currently, there are 57 Omicron cases in India. 

Omicron, first detected in South Africa has a large number of mutations, setting alarm bells ringing since its discovery. 

However, Dr Shahid Jameel, a top virologist, has said that the new hyper-mutated Omicron variant of Covid-19 will not affect India as badly as Delta did early this year. 

Besides South Africa, the Omicron strain has surged Covid cases in many countries including France, Russia, the US, and Israel.
