Bangladesh has shut down seven villages after more than one lakh people attended the funeral of a political leader despite a nationwide lockdown.

As per a Reuters report, the massive gathering occurred in Brahmanbaria district, about 60 km east of the capital Dhaka.

People were seen flouting rules of social distancing and without wearing any mask to attend the funeral of a senior leader of the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlish party Maulana Jubayer Ahmed Ansari who had died of cancer.

Bangladesh government had ordered the suspension of two senior-most policemen in the district for failing to control the large crowd gathering.

The residents of the seven villages were now asked to remain in their homes for fourteen days and they will also be examined whether they had contracted COVID-19.

The political leader had passed away on Friday and by defying lockdown orders people gathered up to catch a glimpse of his funeral on Saturday.

Bangladesh had recorded 2,456 positive cases of coronavirus and 91 deaths till Sunday.

The Bangladesh government had imposed lockdown in the country until at least April 25.
