At least 26 Maoists were killed on Saturday during an encounter with police in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.
Gadchiroli district is more than 900 km from Mumbai.
The district lies on the inter-state border of Chhattisgarh.

A media report quoted said district superintendent of police Ankit Goyal as saying: “We have recovered the bodies of 26 Naxals so far from the forest.”
Goyal said the gun-battle took place in the morning at Korchi in Mardintola forest area when a C-60 police commando team was conducting a search operation.
The operation was led by additional SP Soumya Munde, Goyal said.

Sources said the identity of the Maoists killed in the gun-battle is yet to be ascertained.
A top rebel leader is suspected to be among those killed in the encounter.
Officials said 4 police personnel were seriously injured in the encounter.
The injured police personnel air-lifted to Nagpur in a helicopter for treatment, the report said.
