Gorchuk Police on Monday evening arrested a youth from Lokhra in the city when he went there to extort money from a businessman of Gorchuk.

According to police sources, the accused had demanded an amount of Rs 2 lakh from a businessman in Guorchuk area in the name of ULFA (I) rebel Dristi Rajkhowa on November 4.

The 28-year-old accused has been identified as Hanun Sangma and hails from Agia in Goalpara district.

Officer in-charge of Gorchuk Police Station Dhirendra Kalita said the accused had demanded an amount of Rs 2 lakh over phone in the name of ULFA (I) rebel Dristi Rajkhowa from the businessman.

“Later, the businessman informed at the Gorchuk Police Station and lodged an FIR the same day,” Kalita said.

Kalita said, “As per the plan the accused was asked to collect the amount at Lokhra the next day and our team nabbed him there at around 8 pm on Monday.”

Kalita further informed that the accused had agreed to take only Rs 50,000 from the businessman after a long bargaining.

The accused was produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) on Tuesday and remanded to police custody for four days.

A case (No 629/18) under section 387 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Gorchuk Police Station.

Police also informed that Hanun, during interrogation had admitted that one Thapa coordinated with him in the extortion drive.
