A herd of wild elephants which has strayed out of Kaziranga National Park sixth addition destroyed several houses and crops at Gohpur in Biswanath district and Chariduar near Assam Arunachal Border in Sonitpur district on Saturday night.

The wild elephants came out of Kaziranga National Park from Northern range entered southern part of Gohpur sub division and destroyed several houses at Kuruwa Pathar. Earlier, the herd destroyed crops in Jakapara Bakoridoloni and Paken area of Gohpur subdivision which is about 8 km from Gohpur.

The jumbos also damaged the house of one Runumai Devi in Sengalimari under Nameri range and have been creating havoc for the last couple of days.

In Chariduar a wild elephant destroyed rice godowon of a family. Later villagers drove away the elephant towards Chariduar reserve forest.

Chief Conservator of Forest Northern Range Tezpur P Shiv Kumar told Northeast Now that the herd comprising 30-40 numbers has been taking shelter in Gopal Jaroni near Kaziranga sixth addition.

He said that Wild Life protection team has also been deputed to protect the area after the dusk.
