Punjab Kesari Group of newspapers’ chief editor Vijay Kumar Chopra on Friday was unanimously elected Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI)- India’s premier news agency.

Managing director of Bennett, Coleman and Company Limited (BCCL) Vineet Jain was elected as PTI’s vice-chairman.

The elections took place at a meeting of PTI’s Board of Directors following the news agency’s 71st annual general meeting.

Besides Chopra and Jain, the PTI board members are Mahendra Mohan Gupta (Dainik Jagran), N Shanth Kumar (Deccan Herald), Riyad Mathew (Malayala Manorama), and Aveek Kumar Sarkar (Anandabazar Patrika).

The board members also include MP Veerendra Kumar (Mathrubhumi), R Lakshmipathy (Dinamalar), Hormusji N Cama (Bombay Samachar), Praveen Someshwar(Hindustan Times), Justice RC Lahoti, Deepak Nayyar, Shyam Saran and J F Pochkhanawalla.

Chopra succeeds former editor-in-chief of The Hindu N Ravi as PTI’s chairman.
