While rural Assam is wheezing for lack of healthcare infrastructure and shortage of doctors, the state government unexpectedly set a “strict dress code” for the students in the medical colleges.
Though the Medical Council of India does not prescribe any dress code, the students of the six medical colleges in Assam will now have to adhere to the dress code, or face punishment.
Vice chancellor of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Science (SSUHS), Dipika Deka in a recently issued notification, has restricted party attire, tight fitted/body hugging clothes in the university campuses.
The notification issued by the vice chancellor listed out sixteen clothes and foot wears which will be prohibited in the university campus.
The list also includes T-shirts, micro minis, sheer clothing, walking shorts, pedal pushers, leggings, tights and jogging pants.

The notification also restricts use of on slippers, sandals by worn by males and flashy jewellery and accessories.
“We don’t know as to why the university is forcing us so much on dress codes,” a medical student said, adding that there are several problems with teaching infrastructure in almost all the medical colleges of Assam.
In addition to the six medical colleges, the dress code would also be applicable to 49 other institutions, including dental, homeopathic, nursing and paramedical courses.
