Arrested ULFA-I rebel Deepjyoti Gogoi

Security forces on Monday arrested an ULFA (I) rebel from Borhat area in Charaideo district.

Acting on a tip off, a team of Borhat police and troops of Army’s Dao division launched an operation in the Lafera Gaon area and apprehend the ULFA (I) militant, who was allegedly involved in the Borhat Tea Factory firing incident.

The arrested rebel has been identified as Deepjoyti Gogoi, 25, of Laferagaon under Borhat police station in Charaideo district.

Police officials said one .22 Pistol, four rounds of live ammunition and one mobile with a SIM card were found on him.

The arrested rebel confessed to the police that he brought the arms to be used for extortion purposes and also facilitated the firing incident at the Borhat tea estate in Charaideo district.

Suspected ULFA (Independent) militants opened fire at Borhat tea estate on February 5.

According to police, Deepjoyti was arrested based on the confession of another arrested ULFA (I) rebel Pranob Gogoi alias Pinku Asom.

Pranob was arrested with arms on March 2 by a team of police and army from Borhat.  During interrogation, Pranob revealed to the security officials that both he and Deepjyoti were involved in the incident.

Police said Deepjyoti also sheltered two ULFA (I) cadres– Simanto Gogoi alias Deepto Asom and Papu Baruah– at his house to carry out the attack at Borhat Tea Factory.
