Two Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries during a hand grenade explosion in Imphal on Monday evening.

The incident took place when the personnel were reportedly collecting items used in the ongoing equestrian championship at the Polo Ground, the oldest living polo ground located in the heart of Imphal town around 5.30 pm.

Soon after the incident, additional forces from the State police and other paramilitary forces have rushed to the area and started investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the injured personnel have been identified as Manbahadur Limb (38) of Sikkim and Uttamkumar (52) of Mizoram.

The injured Assam Rifles jawans were later admitted to nearby hospital for their treatment, sources added.

Both the personnel sustained minor injuries on their shoulders and hands.

Sources available here said that both the personnel who belongs to 6 Assam Rifles stationed at Keithelmanbi in the outskirts of Imphal town, have been engaged for the ongoing 15th Director General Assam Rifles Sentinel Cup Equestrian Championship 2018 and 9th Junior State Equestrian Championship at the Polo Ground since February 2 onwards.

Police sources further added that suspected militants might have hurled the grenade from the roadside towards the northern side of the Polo Ground.

However, there is no report of any arrest so far.

At the same time, none of the armed groups operating in the State have claimed responsibility for the incident.

Imphal had already witnessed twin bomb explosions near M Sector located on the eastern side of the Polo Ground in Imphal on January 15 evening this year wherein one 50-year-old sweeper of Imphal Municipal Corporation identified as Y Subita Devi was injured.
