As massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 hit normal life in Tripura, royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma said they will move the Supreme Court against the bill.
Former Tripura Congress president Debbarma has appealed to all to maintain “calm and peace”.
Debbarma said he will consult with the best lawyers and appeal to the apex court for scrapping the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019.
Amid protests across the Northeast against the bill, the Lok Sabha passed the CAB in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
The bill will now face a crucial test in the Rajya Sabha.
The bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have migrated to India after facing persecution on grounds of religion in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh if they fulfil conditions for grant of citizenship.

Debbarma tweeted: “I am appealing for all to maintain calm and peace. We will be going to SC with the best lawyers to scrap this #CitizenshipAmendmentBill.”
Urging the protestors not to get involved in violence and spreading rumours, Debbarma tweeted: “I am hearing news of violence and rumours in our state, don’t spread or be a part of it, don’t take out your anger 2wards the politicians on the ppl (people).”

Meanwhile, to prevent any untoward situation in the situation in the state, the Tripura government suspended internet and SMS services in the state from Tuesday afternoon for 48 hours.
“From Tuesday afternoon all internet facility in the state will be shut down for the next 48 hours. Moreover, SMS facilities will also be restricted,” a police notification stated.
The notification stated that the decision to shut internet and SMS facilities was taken after state police found rumours being mongered about ethnic clashes between tribal and non-tribals in Manu and Kanchanpur areas.
“This has created a violent situation in the area. It has been noticed that SMS, WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are being widely used for transmitting fake images and videos having potential to incite violence in the state at a larger rate,” the notification added.
