Continuing its activities against drugs, the Tripura police on Tuesday destroyed total 6,300 kg of marijuana, locally known as ganja worth Rs 3.15 crore.

The destruction of marijuana was done under the vigil of a High-level Drug Disposal Committee and as per the court order.

Mazumder added that the Tripura government had formed two committees – Drug Disposal Committee and High-level Drug Disposal Committee – consisting of high-level police officials for destruction of contraband drugs and psychotropic substances.

The destruction of ganja took place under tight security at R. K. Nagar in West Tripura district, on the outskirts of the capital city Agartala.

The IG informed that the contraband was seized by police and security forces under four police stations – Udaipur, Dharmanagar, Kalam Chora and Melagarh – during the last few months.

The newly-formed BJP-IPFT government, which was formed 16 months back under the leadership of chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, had taken a massive drive against drug mafias in the state and is working towards a ‘Nasha Mukt Tripura’.

During the same period, police and security forces have seized more than 67,000 kg of marijuana besides other drugs and contrabands, a large quantity of which come from neighbouring Bangladesh that encircles Tripura from three sides with long 856 km border.
