Locals at Ambassa in Tripura’s Dhalai district have opposed to the government’s plans of granting settlement to displaced Bru refugees in Harinchara.
The locals alleged that the Tripura government approved settlement of Bru refugees at Harinchara near Ambassa, “without consulting” them.
Locals allege that setting up a Bru refugee camp at Harinchara would adversely affect jhum cultivation done by the locals.
The locals also apprised the district administration about their apprehensions and threatened to launch an agitation if the latest order is not withdrawn.

The locals had also blocked the Ambassa-Gandacherra road in Tripura’s Dhalai district for several hours demanding the order for setting up of the Bru camp be withdrawn.
The protestors claimed that their daily lives and livelihood would be adversely affected if the displaced Brus are allowed to settle at Harinchara.
Notably, Harinchara is one of the 12 areas in four districts that the Tripura government identified for resettlement of over 35,000 displace Brus.
Permanent settlement of displaced Brus in Tripura follows signing of a quadripartite agreement in January 2020 between the Centre, the state governments of Tripura and Mizoram and representatives of the displaced Brus.
