AGARTALA: In a tragic incident, an 82-year-old woman was discovered residing with the body of her deceased son in a house in Agartala – the capital of Tripura – for the past eight days.

The distressing occurrence took place in the Shivnagar area of Agartala city in Tripura.

Reports indicate that the elderly woman has been bedridden for several years and was left in a helpless state.

According to police sources, Kalyani Sur Chowdhury had been living with her son Sudhir (54) ever since her daughter-in-law departed from the household approximately three years ago due to a family dispute.

Speaking to reporters, Mrinal Paul, the officer-in-charge of the Maharagang Bazar police outpost in Tripura, stated, “Neighbours alerted us upon detecting a foul odour emanating from the house. We promptly proceeded to the residence and, in the presence of an executive magistrate, forcibly entered the premises. Inside, we discovered the body of a man lying on his bed, while his infirm mother was found sleeping in another room.”

“The elderly woman, who is paralyzed, was immediately transported to a nearby health centre. She had been occupying a separate room within the house. Empty alcohol bottles were discovered in the room where the body was found,” the Tripura police official added.

Furthermore, he noted, “No signs of injury were observed on the body.”

Authorities suspect that the man may have succumbed to excessive alcohol consumption.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and upon receipt of the report, the precise cause of death will be determined.
