Tension has gripped the Tripura-Mizoram border areas under Kanchanpur sub-division in North Tripura due to the ongoing nationwide lockdown imposed in view of the COVID19.

The cause of the tension was due to the entry of two youths into the territory of Tripura from the Mizoram side.

They started staying in Kanpui village which is located close to the inter-state border.

The locals detained them in the village and sent back towards the Mizoram side.

The residents of Kanpui village have joined hands with the authorities in the implementation of the nationwide lockdown and ensure that there is no movement of people in any part along the Tripura-Mizoram border.

Besides, there are Indian Reserve (IR) battalion personnel who have also been employed in the Mizoram side.

It has been alleged the locals had beaten the two youths before sending them back.

On Sunday, the security personnel of Mizoram allegedly misbehaved with a local woman from Kanpui village.

An FIR was filed at Vangmun police station with an allegation of assault on the IR personnel by local villagers of Kanpui.

The FIR was lodged by the Mizoram security personnel.

But the locals alleged that Mizoram security personnel had beaten up the local youths.

Sensation prevailed at Kanpui village in Jampui Hills of North Tripura following the clash between the villagers and the IR personnel of Mizoram.

Based on the FIR, local police arrested three youths – Santilal Chakma (31), Bimal Chakma (19) and Mohanlal Chakma (28) of Kanpui village in Jampui Hills.

The three arrested youths were taken to a local hospital for medical tests on Monday but somehow Santilal Chakma fled away.

The two other youths were produced before the court on Tuesday.

Confirming this, the North Tripura superintendent of police, Bhanupada Chakraborty, said three youths were arrested on the basis of an FIR and two among them were produced before the court.

He said a Mizoram police team came to the court to take the youths to Mizoram on transit remand.

The situation went critical on Monday night when several houses of Kanpui village were torched by miscreants.

The locals alleged that the fire was set by some people from Mizoram.

The residents of Kanpui village passed a sleepless night on Monday.

Many of the villagers fled from the village on Monday night and took shelter in the jungle.
