In a speedy judgement, North Tripura District and Sessions Court on Wednesday awarded death sentence to a 28-year-old man for raping and killing a minor girl last year.

Justice Goutam Sarkar, the judge of North Tripura District and Sessions Court, pronounced the punishment to the accused, Sanjoy Tanti, for two separate offences.

Tanti has been awarded death sentence under the Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder) and 376-AB (raping a girl of 12-year-old and below).

Sanjoy Tanti has also been fined an amount of Rs 50,000.

The incident of rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl took place on September 24, 2018 at Maheshpur village in North Tripura district.

Sanjoy Tanti, who was convicted in the case, was a tea garden worker.

After physically assaulting the minor girl the accused dumped her body in a drain.

A case was registered under Kadamtala Police Station after the incident.

The body was recovered after seven days of the incident.

“The convict has also been sentenced to life imprisonment for the offence of unnatural sex with the 7-year-old girl,” assistant public prosecutor Sudarshan Sharma told Northeast Now.

He said, “After DNA test it was confirmed that the accused raped the girl and later killed her.”

The judge examined 21 prosecution witnesses before awarding the punishment.

The judgement came within 11 months after the incident.

After the judgement, the people of Maheshpur village and the victim’s family members have expressed their satisfaction.
