Two weeks after the suicide of a 23-year-old woman in South Tripura, her husband also took the extreme step by consuming suicide on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Ananda Tripura, a resident of Birendra Chowmuhani Bazaar under Betaga ADC village in South Tripura district.

Ananda’s wife Anil Mala Tripura committed suicide on May 5 by consuming poison after a video that depicted her in a compromising position with a man from the neighbourhood was displayed on a screen at a public meeting at Sabroom.

Following the meeting, a group of locals led by two BJP leaders– Kamal Tripura and Sajal Tripura–gathered at the residence of the woman and tortured her.

The mob allegedly dragged the woman out of her house and stripped her.

They garlanded her with shoes, shaved her head, and paraded her naked around the village after tying her hands with a rope.

Tripura police arrested 11 persons in connection with the incident following Tripura High Court taking suo-motu cognizance of the case.

South Tripura district Dr Kulwant Singh said Ananad had been suffering from depression since his wife committed suicide.

“Anand’s autopsy was conducted in the presence of a magistrate. He had been suffering from depression for the past few days,” SP Singh told Northeast Now.

The Sabroom police station had filed a suo motu case under Section 323, 354, 306 and 34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for abetting suicide.
