A journalist on Wednesday sustained serious injuries while being attacked by miscreants at Shantipur village in Tripura’s Kanchanpur.

The victim has been identified as Bikash Das, a correspondent of the Syandan Patrika, a local newspaper published from Agartala.

According to sources, Bikash had gone to Shantipur village to report on corruption, where a group of miscreants attacked him with sharp weapons, rods and bamboos.

They also vandalized his four-wheeler.

The attack was allegedly led by the chairman of the Shantipur village committee Shimul Chakma, who is also a BJP member.

However, Bikash managed to free himself from the clutches of the attackers and ran away towards the jungle nearby.

Then he went to Kanchanpur Police Station to report the incident.

He was later admitted to a hospital in Kanchanpur and his condition is said to be critical.

Different journalist organizations of the state condemned the attack on the journalist and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

In September last year, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb had threatened journalists during a government programme in Sabroom.

The Assembly of Journalists, an organization of media persons in Tripura, started a massive movement across the state demanding the chief minister to take back his words, to which the latter refused.

About 24 journalists have been seriously injured in different attacks in Tripura in the past three years.

These attacks have allegedly been carried out by members of the ruling BJP-led state government.
