The Tripura education department on Thursday suspended the holding of regular classes for students of classes I and II for an indefinite period.

The state education minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the suspension of classes.

He said regular classes for students of IIIrd and IVth standards will continue to be held thrice a week.

The minister said the decision has been taken in view of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the state.

Regular classes of students of higher standards, hostels and colleges will, however, remain functional.

“The decision suspending classes at the lowest level of schools has been entailed by the fresh outbreak of coronavirus infections and the vulnerability of tender-aged children to the deadly diseases,” said Ratan Lal Nath.

He said that the decision will be reviewed later in an official meeting and a change may be announced afresh, depending on the situation.
