Nagaland Governor P B Acharya on Sunday said that universities should not only focus in giving academic knowledge to the youth, but they also develop as centres and agencies of development.

Governor Acharya made this remark while addressing an academic gathering in Imphal organized by the Manipur chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Culture.

The Governor further wondered as to why the region is suffering from under-development when it is gifted with natural resources such as petrol and coal, which are required to produce electricity.

Acharya was of the view that education system should focus on how to utilize the natural resources of the region.

While stating that the Northeast is rich in culture and music, he said that highly educated people from the region are scattered working in different parts of the country.

The Governor further said that though the agenda of every university is to empower people, create wealth and to strengthen the society, it is not really happening in the region.

Retired professor N Joykumar Singh while delivering his speech on historical prospect of the Northeast said that keeping aside the mindset that the region is backward, if everyone works on tapping the potential of the natural resources then the region will be much more developed.
