Suspected Ulfa (I) militants abducted a supervisor of a private tea estate of Jagun in Tinsukia district on June 8. According to sources, Dinanath Upadhyaya, who was employed as a supervisor of a private tea garden of Tinsukia district was abducted by the rebel outfit who are active in the Upper Assam area of Tinsukia district.

Upadhyaya was abducted by a group of five motorcycle-borne youths while he was on his way to local market, police told Northeast Now.

Police suspected that the abduction was either carried out by the Ulfa (I) alone or jointly by the Ulfa (I) and NSCN (K) militants with the latter also being active in the area.

Sources said that Upadhyaya was recently served with an extortion note by the banned Ulfa (I) for an undisclosed sum but he reportedly declined to pay the amount.

Following the incident, security forces have begun an intense search operation along the Assam-Arunachal border to locate the abducted tea garden employee.

Police have arrested an Ulfa (I) linkman Babu Basumatary alias Hemkanta in connection with the incident.
