Along with social organizations from Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts of Assam, ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress workers also participated in a hunger strike at Parliament Street in New Delhi on Tuesday to press for the demand for early implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Constitution for creation of autonomous state within the State of Assam for the Karbi Anglong and NC Hills.
The organizations demanded that the issue be tabled in the ensuing Winter Session of Parliament. The hunger strike began from 11 am and ended in the evening.
President, Karbi Anglong and NC Hills Autonomous State Demand Committee (KANCHASDCOM), Ajit Timung said, “The various social organizations of Karbi Anglong and NC Hills have united to demonstrate and stage the hunger strike at Parliament Street for one intention only, that is, for early implementation of Article 244 (A) of the constitution for creation of an Autonomous State within the State of Assam for the hill tribe people of Karbi Anglong and NC Hills. Our demand to the Central government is to discuss the Autonomous State issue in the ensuing Winter Session of Parliament. What we want is the earliest solution on the issue.”
President, Karbi Riso Adorbar, Bimang Kro said, “The Autonomous State is a longstanding demand of the people and the Central government should be serious on it. This time the demand should be taken up in the winter session of parliament.”
Kro informed that apart from KANCHSDCOM and KRA, there are several organizations including Bijoy Bey led Karbi Students Association, Karbi Unemployed Youth Association, Dimasa Students Union, Karbi Anglong District Committee and from NC Hills are Dimasa Students Union and Dimasa Women Society. Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Umrongso, BJP and Congress workers also participated in the strike.
Separate memorandums were submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, national BJP president, Amit Shah and national Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
