Sikkim govt. embarks on tech-based solutions for garbage disposal

A scientific sanitary landfill and 50 TPD compost plant for disposing of inert waste were inaugurated by Sikkim urban development and housing department N. K.Subba at the dumping ground in Sang Khola, Martam on Tuesday. He also inspected the whole area and the process of dumping yard.
The scientific sanitary landfill and 50 TPD compost plant were constructed under the guidance of UD&HD and Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), which was funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Inaugurating the landfill in the presence of officials of the UD&HD and the Gangtok Municipal Corporation minister N. K. Subba said “The landfill site would go a long way in keeping the city of Gangtok and other places clean by ensuring that the waste generated are properly segregated and dumped at the site. He also said that the state government is embarking on other technology-based solutions for waste management to make Sikkim a garbage-free state.”
He also congratulated and expressed his gratitude on successful completion of the project.
“A scientific landfill ensures that there is no risk of pollutants. This reduces the risk of environmental or health hazards tremendously” the minister added.
The sanitary landfill was designed for disposal of only rejects from the processing plants and inert waste that cannot be processed or recycled.
