Sikkim: BRO reconstructs bridge damaged in catastrophic floods

Guwahati: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully completed the reconstruction of the Indrani Bridge in Sikkim, reconnecting the northern region of the Himalayan state to the rest of India.

This crucial infrastructure project stands as a testament to the resilience and skilled craftsmanship of the BRO, marking a significant milestone in the region’s recovery from recent natural disasters, a defence PRO said in a press statement.

The Indrani Bridge, originally constructed by the Sikkim Public Works Department, was severely damaged during the catastrophic flash floods that struck the Teesta River valley on October 4, 2023, it said.

The disaster led to widespread destruction, including the road network and several bridges along the river, effectively isolating northern Sikkim from the rest of the country. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Sikkim government swiftly initiated plans to restore connectivity, it added.

A joint survey conducted with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a bailey suspension bridge at the Indrani Bridge site, it said.

Under the leadership of the 764 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) of Project Swastik, the BRO commenced the construction of a 300-foot bailey suspension bridge, it added.

Their dedication, engineering prowess and adherence to strict timelines have been instrumental in the successful completion of this critical infrastructure project, it said.

The newly constructed Indrani Bridge will be officially inaugurated today (August 12), marking a new chapter in Sikkim’s journey towards recovery and growth. This bridge not only reconnects the North of Sikkim but also lays the foundation for enhanced economic and social development in the region, it added,

The successful completion of the Indrani Bridge project underscores the power of collaborative efforts, the expertise of engineering and the determination to overcome adversity, it said.

The statement further said that as Sikkim continues its journey of recovery and growth, this bridge will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the state’s future prosperity.
