Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Monday said the newly enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, 2019 will not be implemented in the state.
“CAA won’t be implemented in Sikkim as the state enjoys special status under Article 371 (F) of the Indian Constitution,” Tamang told reporters in Gangtok.
“Some opposition parties are ‘misleading’ the people over CAA even after union home minister Amit Shah clarified that it will not be implemented in Sikkim until it is approved by the Assembly,” Tamang added.
“Some people with vested interest are misleading people in Sikkim on amended citizenship law. It will not have any implications in the state,” he reiterated.
Opposition parties such as Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) and Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) on Friday had protested against the Act in Sikkim.
HSP working president Bhaichung Bhutia had mentioned that there was lots of confusion among the people of Sikkim regarding the new Act.
Bhutia had also asserted that as it was not written anywhere about the exemption of Sikkim from the CAB, so it hints that the state has not been excluded from the bill.
The former football player had also met union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday.
During the meeting with Shah, he raised the issue that Sikkim is not mentioned in writing in the CAA about Sikkim’s exemption from the Act and implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
