Sikkim taekwondo team is back home after an impressive performance in the 10th Senior National Poomsae & 37th Senior National Kyorugi Taekwondo Championship 2018.

It was held from 18-22 September at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

The state team bagged 10 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 9 bronze medals along with team championship trophy in Poomsae.

A 25-member Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association [SATA] team had represented the State in the championship. The team was led by the coach, Sanjay Subba. More than 31 teams from different states, paramilitary forces and other organizations participated.

In a small function at Paljor Stadium on Friday, SATA felicitated the state team members for their outstanding performances in the championship. The function had the Secretary to Sports & Youth Affairs Department, SD Dhakal as the chief guest.

On the occasion, the Secretary congratulated the team members for winning the championship trophy, medals for the State. He also lauded the contributions of SATA chief coach, Trilok Subba. The Secretary stated that the State government has been providing incentives, support and encouragement in sports for the welfare and growth of sportsperson and development of sports in the State.

Sikkim Olympic Association general secretary, Arjuna Awardee Jaslal Pradhan and SYA Department Additional Director, Kamal Chettri also congratulated the entire team for their outstanding performance.

In his report of the championship, SATA chief coach, Trilok Subba stated that the championship was very competitive among experienced martial artists. He stated that the State team performed exceptionally well and impressed everyone to win the team championship in poomsae. “This was the result of hard work and dedication of players and coaches. This achievement by senior team would definitely encourage and motivate upcoming players of the State,” he expressed.

Subba mentioned that all gold medallists have qualified for India camp for the upcoming World Taekwondo Championship to be held in November in China Taipei..
