Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya erupted in strong protests on Thursday as more than a dozen organizations staged a sit-in demonstration to pressurize the Conrad Sangma Government to set up entry and exit points to check infiltration, resolve inter-state boundary dispute and speed up the process of shifting settlers from Thew ïew Mawlong area.

As many as 13 organizations joining the agitation also threatened to set up their own entry/exit points to check illegal migrants if the State Government fails to do so.

Exit and points were proposed to be set up across the State as per the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016.

Of the 41 entry-exit points identified in the different districts of the State, 18 are located in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region and 23 in the Garo Hills region.

The 13 agitating groups also asked the Meghalaya government to find solution on the issue related to shifting of the settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.

Over the issue of myriad of problems faced by the people residing along the inter-state boundary with Assam, the protesting organizations were of the view that both the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya should convene a meeting to discuss the matter and resolve the issue at the earliest.

The sit-in protest was organized at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat.
