The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) has introduced Commerce as a new elective subject in its updated syllabus.

As studying Commerce allows a student to understand how business activities influence the society and the economy directly and indirectly, the SEBA introduced the new elective subject.

Launching the new programme ‘An introduction to Commerce’, Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya said that the subject will be introduced in Class X also from 2021.

Bhattacharya said the new elective subject would provide the students the glimpse of Accountancy, Insurance and Banking.

The textbook of Commerce is being designed as per international standards, the minister said.

Students of Class IX will now be able to take Commerce as an elective subject from 2020, he said.

A meeting was held on Friday at the Gauhati Commerce College to discuss about the introduction of Commerce as an elective subject.

The minister presided over the meeting, which was attended by officials of SEBA and senior teachers from different schools.

“Introduction of Commerce as an elective subject will help the students in Class XI and XII,” Bhattacharya said.

The government teachers will be also provided with five day training on the syllabus module of the new elective subject.
