In a first-of-its-kind initiative rickshaw-pullers and handcart pullers of Tangla were felicitated, for their tireless services to the society. The All Rabha Sahitya Sabha in collaboration with reputed contractor Girin Deka and noted comedian Bipul Rabha, felicitated as many as 90 rickhsaw and handcart pullers.
The felicitation ceremony was held at the Satish Chandra Rabha Memorial Ground in Tangla on Monday. The rickshaw-pullers and handcart pullers were feted with a phulam gamocha and japi each by Girin Deka and Bipul Rabha. Many of them were emotional for recognizing their efforts. The organizers also hosted a feast on the occasion.
Speaking on the ocassion Bipul Rabha said, “Ican share the pain and sufferings of the rickshaw and hand-cart pullers who work in the scorching sun, at chilly winter nights and even in the heavy rains. He described the community engaged in the transportation work for their livelihood as the most disadvantageous.”
“Despite the rickshaw pullers working in a tireless profession, which even affects their health in the long run they are not appreciated by the society”, added Rabha.
Organizing secretary ARSU, Jayanta Rabha said, “We never address these people with respect, eventually they lose their identity when they get absorbed in the profession. They are addressed as rickhshawala and thelawala.
