Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary Ram Madhav on Tuesday accused Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla of indulging in rampant corruption and promised if elected to power his party would make Mizoram a corruption-free state.

Speaking at an interaction programme with the youths Ram Madhav said Lal Thanhawla has centralised corruption and said that he and his younger brother were siphoning off government funds according to their whims and fancies.

“Lal Thanhawla promised that he would uproot corruption, but in reality corruption is rampant. Not the rural areas, the urban areas in Mizoram also lack basic amenities,” Ram Madhav alleged.

Ram Madhav accused the present Mizoram government of neglecting the people and the state of Mizoram saying that Lal Thanhawla’s government does not care to push anything for Mizoram despite the funds available at the centre.

“I was in Champhai, a town near Indo-Myanmar border, a place so beautiful deemed fit to be called Darjeeling of the Northeast, but due to poor governance roads are in terrible shape and almost impossible to visit. In other states potholes are in between the roads while in Mizoram road is in between the potholes,” Ram Madhav said.

The BJP general secretary said Mizoram could become a major trade hub once Act East policy is in place. “Mizoram being sandwiched by Myanmar and Bangladesh could become a major trade centre in the Northeast. If we are voted to power we will establish dry port in Mizoram and will set up a direct trade link with Chittagong,” Ram Madhav said.
