Both the district civil and police administrations along with the Transport Department in Darrang district have promised to bring the long-felt traffic congestion in Mangaldai town to an end. They have also assured of executing pragmatic scientific planning to check road mishaps in the streets of the district to bring down the figure of casualties, due to road mishaps, especially in the stretch of NH 15 passing through the district, to ‘zero’.
These promises have been made in public at Mangaldai on Monday by several top administrative, police and transport officials of the district including Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kr Barman, Superintendent of Police, Sreejith T., Additional Deputy Commissioner, Pankaj Chakravorty and Dipanjoli Borah, District Transport Officer among others while attending the inaugural function of the 29th edition of the National Road Safety Week, 2018 organized by the District Transport Department at its office premises.

Addressing the participants, comprising officials and staff members of the Transport Department, owners and staff members of a good number of commercial vehicles, automobile dealers and local leading citizens, as the Chief Guest, Deputy Commissioner Barman expressed his deep concern over the alarming rise in the number of fatal road accidents and spoke on the importance of public awareness regarding traffic rules.
Barman stressed on public awareness on traffic rules to avoid any kind of road mishap not only to keep himself or herself safe but also for the sake of their families.
The Darrang DC also outlined the steps taken by the district administration to bring an end to the long standing traffic snarls in Mangaldai town because of the fast increase in the number of vehicles with the opening of the new multi-storey parking complex along the bank of ‘Bor Pukhuri’ followed by declaration of both sides of the two most busy streets namely LNB Road and BR Road as ‘no parking zones’.
DC Barman also spoke about the introduction of ‘Green Taxi’ within the 8 km radius of the town while regulating the entry of commercial local passenger vehicles at Blok Chouka and Saikiapara in two different places on both sides of the NH 15 which are being considered to be the entrance to the township.
Speaking on the occasion , Superintendent of Police Sreejith Thiraviam asserted the commitment of the police to take strict action against the traffic rule violators and apprised the gathering that with a view to monitor the movements of all vehicles, the district police has already installed internet protocol (IP) cameras with high resolution in various locations.
Circle Officer of Mangaldai Revenue Circle, Deep Sikha Saikia, Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Amit Hojai also addressed the function.
Earlier in the function, anchored by radio announcer Pranjal Sarma, District Transport Officer Deepanjoli Bora in her welcome address explained the significance of the Road Safety Week.
This was followed by an awareness motor vehicles rally through the greater Mangaldai which was jointly flagged off by both the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police.
As part of the celebration of the Road Safety Week, the District Transport Officer assisted by Motor Vehicle Inspector Padma Lochan Hazarika and Enforcement Inspector Sahab Uddin Tapadar, has taken up a series of programmes which include public awareness in public bus stops, training programme with the help of the District Disaster Management Department on how to extend helping hand following a road accident, free health and eye screening camp with the help of the Health Department among others.
